In commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary, the San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum (SAAACAM) will present Freedom: The Soundtrack of 250 Years—a transformative evening of music, narration, and reflection at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. This program explores the vital role of Black musical traditions as expressions of power, protest, and community from the nation’s founding to the present.
The evening centers the San Antonio Gospel Heritage Choir, whose repertoire of Negro spirituals and gospel anthems brings forward the encoded messages, communal strength, and enduring hope embedded in early African American song traditions. They will be joined by the Grammy Award–winning Sounds of Blackness, whose genre-spanning artistry bridges gospel, jazz, R&B, and soul to illuminate stories of resilience and liberation across generations.
