CELEBRATION OF FREEDOM

Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865—the day federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to enforce the freedom of enslaved people, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

It is a reminder that freedom, while declared, must also be delivered.

In Bexar County, Juneteenth has been observed for generations, rooted in a long-standing tradition of Emancipation Day celebrations dating back to the 1800s. Today, it remains the longest-running African American holiday and a living reflection of resilience, progress, and responsibility.

2026: A DEFINING MOMENT

In 2026, Juneteenth in Bexar County aligns with the 250th anniversary of the United States.

This year’s celebration is not just about history—it is about understanding our collective story and shaping what comes next.
